Wow, this book was NOT quite appropriate for my son who picked it out but he’s tended to gravitate to the 900’s in our new library. Even though it wasn’t quite appropriate, he was captured by this girl’s diary, learning about Caesar getting murdered, Cleopatra’s brother-husbands dying questionable deaths, love affairs and babies, and many more interesting topics that seemed to lead us to many discussions.
It can’t have helped that to honour her, Caesar had placed a statue of Cleopatra covered in gold in the temple of Venus Genetrix – the goddess who brings forth life, who was held in high regard by his family.

She had lovers in which she used as allies in order to take the throne and keep it for herself and not share it with anyone. Not her sisters, her father, or her husband. She even had her siblings killed to prevent them from possibly killing her and taking the throne from her.
But, perhaps it is a decent start for children and teens. I am really curious about how good the other books in the series are. I hope someday I get to read them.

Concerning this specific diary, I did find the characterization very bland. But the details and the events of the story seemed to make up for it well enough to keep it at four stars, because after all, I did pick this up for the historical aspects, and not the characters.

Another thing that I noticed while reading this with a more adult lens is more info the fact that this little Cleopatra is a bit of a narcissist. Now, having a healthy amount of confidence in oneself is a good thing. However, little Cleopatra here thinks she’s the best thing since the invention of fire.
